Itinerary

DAY 1

Marrakech → Ouarzazate → Skoura → Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Rissani → Merzouga

9H00 AM
565 KM

You will travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4WD vehicle. Your driver, who is a specialist in the Great South region and speaks either French or English, will ensure a safe and authentic exploration of the area.

The journey begins early in the morning as you depart from your hotel. You’ll head towards Ouarzazate, surrounded by the stunning Atlas Mountains. After approximately 2.5 hours, you’ll drive through the Tichka Mountain Pass, with a brief stop for some traditional Moroccan mint or absinthe tea before reaching Ouarzazate. Situated on the eastern slope of the High Atlas, Ouarzazate lies at the crossroads of the enchanting southern valleys. The region’s charm is characterized by its numerous adobe kasbahs, dry plains and mountains, lush oases and palm groves, and ochre-colored villages.

After Ouarzazate, you will enter the Skoura Valley, known for its vibrant colors, before reaching the stunning Todra Gorges and Dades Valley. Here, ancient kasbahs stand sentinel against the cliffs, creating a breathtaking landscape that showcases the beauty of the rocks.

The road to Tineghir winds through lush palm groves and Berber villages for about 15 kilometers.  Next, you will visit the historic khotarra of Jorf, which were used as waterworks in the 15th century. This will lead you to Erfoud, a town famous for its fossils and mineral products, including ammonites, trilobites, and marble.

Among the fossils found here are petrified skeletons of dinosaurs that are 65 million years old, providing a glimpse into the prehistoric history of the region.

After a scenic drive, you will arrive at the desert. In Merzouga, you will reach the camp where you will be welcomed with mint tea and Moroccan pastries. Check-in will include dinner and accommodation in our main camp.

DAY 2

Erg Chebbi

Live a full day in the desert.

You can choose between a sunrise or sunset experience by the camp. Please check with our manager during your arrival to let us know your preferred option, and we will make it happen.

After breakfast, your driver will be waiting to take you on an adventure in the beautiful Sahara. You’ll have the opportunity to visit a nomadic family and enjoy traditional mint tea with them. You’ll also explore fossils and oases, depending on the time of year. Lunch can be served at the camp or somewhere else.

If you’re looking for an adventure, consider booking a buggy or ATV tour. In the afternoon, you can enjoy a camel ride while watching the beautiful sunset, unless you choose the sunrise experience instead. Finally, you’ll return to the camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

DAY 3

Erg Chebbi → Erfoud → Ifrane → Fes

8H00 AM

Start at 8:00 am. Departure to Rissani and Erfoud in order to visit the treatment plant marble fossilized before continuing to the beautiful Ziz Valley dotted with palm trees. After lunch we will stop by Ifrane, a charming ski resort, for a visit before reaching Fes at the end of the day.

Getting There

By Jeep

Half the fun is getting there! It’s a spectacular trip — the drive is a reason in itself for visiting the desert . It’s an eclectic mix of mountain passes, lush valleys, Berber villages clinging to the mountain side , dilapidated kasbahs, palm groves and awe inspiring rock formations. It is simply an exciting voyage , as one travels through a myriad of landscapes from the frenetic activity of Marrakech to the calm and open vistas of the desert.

The trip to the desert is quite long, about 9 hours, but it should not be rushed. There’s a timelessness about the desert , and the trip should not be governed by the need to arrive anywhere at a specific time. For sure, one wants to arrive at the camp near sunset, but you don’t want to hurry either.

Ideally, the preferred itinerary, provided you have time, is to spend one night at a some Kasbah  en Road to the desert , some days in the desert and then return to Marrakech or Fez (Fes). if you don’t have so much time available, you can either drive direct to the desert, or reduce the length of staying at the camp to two nights.

So, if you are going directly to the camp from Marrakech or Fes we suggest you depart as early as possible, about 06:00. If staying en route a departure sometime after breakfast is fine.

Most guests take a 4×4 with driver, not only because it is more relaxing and informative, but also because the camp is difficult to find and the drive in the desert quite technical. However, it is also possible to self-drive as far as ERFOUD and rent from there a 4×4 with driver. For those seeking adventure you can rent a 4×4 in Marrakech and drive to the camp although you will require a guide from Erfoud or Merzouga.

There is no specific itinerary, because everyone has different interests and wants to do things at a different pace.

Private Jet

Traveling by plane or private jet is indeed the fastest way to reach the desert.Best means of transport for those who don’t have time. The nearest airport from Merzouga is Errachidia (2 hours drive).

Prices on request only.

Commercial flights

The nearest commercial airport is Errachidia, which is 2 hours from the camp. There are 5 flights per week from Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc.

You also have another option starting from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, a 5-hour drive from the camp. (2 flights per week).
